The Benefits of Enzymes in Skin Care and How to Choose the Best Mask
Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions. In skin care, enzymes are all-natural, gentle ingredients used to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells, and improve skin texture and appearance.
At Skintessence, we highlight the use of enzymes in our amazing, professional-grade masks.
Enzymes can be derived from fruit, plants, and other organisms. We specifically use fruit/plant enzymes in our products; the enzymes are extracted from the fruit either by filtration, centrifugation, or dehydration, depending on the type of fruit. They also help our masks smell amazing!
Some of the most common enzymes used in skin care include:
Papain: This enzyme is derived from papaya fruit and is a powerful exfoliator. This enzyme is used in our Essential Exfoliation Mask.
Bromelain: This enzyme is derived from pineapple and is also a good exfoliator. This enzyme is also used in our Essential Exfoliation Mask!
Enzymes from pumpkin, banana, and other fruits: These enzymes are gentler than papain and bromelain and are often used in products for sensitive skin. Our Fall Essential Mask features fragrant pumpkin enzymes, and our Springtime Essential Mask uses a wonderful mix of herbal enzymes.
The enzymes in our masks serve several purposes:
Exfoliate the skin: Enzymes can help to remove dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin.
Improve skin texture: Enzymes can help to break down keratin plugs that can clog pores and cause acne.
Reduce hyperpigmentation: Enzymes can help to lighten dark spots and uneven skin tone.
Improve skin hydration: Enzymes can help to break down hyaluronic acid, which helps to keep the skin hydrated.
Reduce inflammation: Enzymes can help to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin.
Improve well-being and circulation: The aroma of fruit and herbal enzymes also helps with positive feelings and improves circulation.
Enzymes are a gentle and effective way to improve the appearance of the skin. They are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
Many people see masks as a monthly or annual treat, but don’t fall into that thinking. Masks are an important part of your skin care routine and should be used 2 times/week! This step is so important that we call it out as Step 2 in our Skin Care Guide!
Every Collection we offer has a recommended mask! Our Essential Exfoliation Mask with Pineapple & Papaya Enzymes is recommended in our Essentials Collection, Influencer Collection, and Ageless Collection, and our Rescue Mask is for our Rescue Collection.
