Hello, Autumn! How the Change of Seasons Can Affect Your Skin

Autumn is the season of change … changing leaves, changing sweaters, and for some, changing skin! As the weather starts to cool and the season shifts, it’s time to review how your skin can be affected — not just in the fall but any time weather patterns change!

You might not notice these changes right away, and some people are more affected than others, but it’s good to know what to look for and adjust your products accordingly.

Check Your Skin Daily for These Signs

  • Dryness and flaking: This is more common in the winter, when the air is colder and drier. It can also be a problem in the summer, especially if you live in a humid climate or spend a lot of time outdoors.

  • Oiliness and breakouts: This is more common in the summer, when the weather is warmer and more humid. Increased oil production can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

  • Sensitivity and irritation: Your skin may become more sensitive to products and other irritants during seasonal changes. This is because the skin barrier may be weakened.

  • Changes in pigmentation: Sun exposure can cause your skin to become darker or lighter, and it can also lead to the formation of sunspots. This is more common in the summer, when people tend to spend more time outdoors, but many don’t even notice the difference until the weather cools in the fall.

In addition to these general changes, there are some specific skin conditions that can be exacerbated by seasonal changes. For example:

  • eczema is more likely to flare up in the winter

  • rosacea is more likely to flare up in the summer

How to Take Care of Your Skin During Seasonal Changes

  • Adjust your skincare routine: You may want to try different products depending on the season. For example, while cleanser, toner, masks and serums can stay consistent year round, you may need to use our Blemish Rescue Moisturizer if acne tends to flare up in the summer months, but switch to Essential-C Moisturizer in the winter.

    • Determine your overall skin type and see all recommended products on our Start Here page.

  • Protect your skin from the sun: This is important to do all year round, but it is especially important in the summer, when the sun is stronger. Be sure to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30, even on cloudy days.

  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is important for overall health and well-being, but it is also important for skin health. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day.

  • Avoid super-hot showers and baths: Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead, take lukewarm showers and baths. Use our Hand + Body Care products year-round!

  • Use a humidifier: If you live in a dry climate, a humidifier can help to add moisture to the air and prevent your skin from drying out.
